Yann Songo’o is fast becoming a reliable and consistent member of the Plymouth Argyle squad since he joined in June 2016. Songo’o, who was born in France but is of Cameroonian descent, can play has a holding midfielder or as a centre-back. The 25 year-old’s versatility has clearly impressed manager Derek Adams for whom he played under at Ross County previously.
Songo’o has proven to be a determined and solid player for Argyle. Whether that be breaking up the play and shielding the defence in a holding midfield role, or putting his body on the line and making numerous tackles and blocks at centre-back.
Songo’o spent the majority of his youth career in Spain, playing for Deportivo La Coruna for eight years before moving back to France briefly to spend 1 year with Ligue 1 side Metz. At the age of 18 Songo’o moved back to Spain to join Zaragoza and signed for their B team a year later.
After one season with Zaragoza B, Songo’o left and had spells at lower league Spanish clubs Sabadell and Pobla Mafumet. After only a handful of appearances in Spain, the Cameroonian made the decision to move to the USA in the shape of Sporting Kansas City. He was immediately loaned to third division side Orlando City for whom he spent the rest of the 2012/13 season with.
In July 2013 Songo’o was released by Sporting Kansas and joined then Championship side Blackburn Rovers, however first-team opportunities were limited and in January of that season he joined SPL side Ross County on loan for five months who were then managed by current Argyle boss Derek Adams.
Songo’o was a free agent for most of the 2015/16 season after being released by Rovers. The 25 year-old trained with The Pilgrims during this season until signing permanently for the club and has gone on to have the most consistent and successful spell of his career and was part of the Argyle squad that won promotion to League One last year.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Songo’o is versatile enough to play both centre-back or as a central holding midfielder. Playing as a centre-back, the 25 year-old is excellent in putting his body on the line to make crucial blocks. He is also a good reader of the game which allows the Cameroonian to make vital interceptions and tackles.
Songo’o is limited in the pace department which does allow opposition forwards to get in behind if his positioning is not up to standards.
As a holding midfielder Songo’o uses his strength to break up opposition attacks and start the play for his team. Although he is not the best passer of the ball, Songo’o does the basics of what a any manager wants from a holding midfielder and his also very effective in the air.
What They Say
Derek Adams – Plymouth Argyle Manager
“Yann can play in either role. I have known him for many years. I played him at centre-half for my last club (Ross County). I took him here and moved him into midfield.
“Yann is a winner. He’s one that wants to compete and you need these type of players in your team.”
