Bury kick off their Carabao Cup campaign with a tough first round tie against Championship newcomers Sunderland. The game- broadcast live on sky sports, will see Lee Clark face Simon Grayson for the second time this season, after the black cats narrow 3-2 win in a preseason friendly.
The shakers started the season with a 1-0 win over Walsall, with a goal from summer signing Jermaine Beckford proving the difference between the two sides, despite Beckford and Chris Maguire both missing penalties. After a raft of summer signings including the aforementioned Beckford, Stephen Dawson, Nicky Ajose and Callum Riley, Bury went from relegation favourites to promotion hopefuls, and will be hoping the test with higher opposition will give them a good gauge of where they are at.
Debuts could be given to summer signings Joe Skarz, Chris Humphreys, Tom Heardman, Alex Whitmore and Chris Sang. Harry Bunn could also be in line to make his first appearance after his move from premier league new boys Huddersfield. However, Danny Mayor, Phil Edwards, Eoghan O’Connell, Nathan Cameron and Jay O’Shea are all set to miss out due to injury.
Sunderland drew with Derby to start their first season outside of the top flight since 2006, with Lewis Grabbans penalty cancelling out Bradley Johnsons 11th minute opener. Grayson is expected to pick a mix of youth and experience as they look to avoid an early exit to lower league opposition. Sunderland are likely to be without Paddy McNair, Donald Love, Bryan Oviedo and Jack Rodwell due to injury. Also, Wahbi Khazri, Jeremain Lens and Lamine Kone could all miss out as they try to force moves away from the stadium of light.
A key talking point could be James Vaughan’s homecoming after his summer move to Sunderland. After enjoying the best season of his career in the north west, the question is will he receive a hero’s welcome or a chorus of boos on his return to Gigg Lane.
